What Member Ownership Means After a Credit Union Merger

A not for profit credit union belongs to its members rather than outside stockholders. That principle shaped how we described Route 1 Credit Union to families in Paris and the surrounding Illinois counties. Our institution became part of Decatur Earthmover Credit Union on November 1, 2017, so the old membership language on this domain is a record of a cooperative’s past, not an active invitation to join. What, then, carries forward when a member-owned institution merges?

How our members shaped Route 1

In the cooperative model, a member maintains a qualifying share and has a voice in governance under the institution’s rules. Our historical materials described annual meetings and the election of a board.

The member-owned cooperative structure also helps clarify the phrase not-for-profit. A credit union can earn income, cover expenses and build reserves. Its purpose is service to members, not distributing earnings to external shareholders. That does not mean every service is free, every member receives the same terms or a particular institution can never charge fees.

From local roots to the 2017 merger

Our history connects a series of names to changing groups of eligible members. Four dates provide a compact timeline:

YearRecorded milestone
1957Chartered as the U.O. Colson Credit Association for Colson Company employees.
1992After Colson closed, the charter expanded to occupations in Paris; the name became Paris Industrial & Occupational Credit Union.
2003The institution became Route 1 Credit Union and expanded its field of membership to Clark and Edgar counties.
Nov. 1, 2017Route 1 merged into Decatur Earthmover Credit Union, as confirmed by the successor’s 2018 member newsletter.

The early milestones reflect our origins in Paris and the surrounding counties. The merger date comes from Decatur Earthmover’s contemporary member communication, not from a new service claim on this legacy domain.

What a merger changes and what it does not prove

A merger changes which institution holds the operational relationship, along with the applicable charter, rules, systems and records. The broad cooperative idea may continue within the successor organization, but this general description cannot confirm the status of any particular former member’s loan, share account or voting rights.

The former Route 1 website refers to share deposits, rates and membership categories in the present tense. They are useful evidence of how our organization once communicated with members, not proof of terms that apply in 2026. A former member should not use an archived fee, account number or old contact form to make a current financial decision.

Where to check present-day information

For questions about an existing account, contact the currently responsible credit union using independently verified contact details, and ask for documents tied to the account itself. For information on Illinois-chartered credit unions, Illinois credit-union oversight is handled through the state’s financial institutions regulator. That public regulatory role is distinct from any promise that an old Route 1 product continues.

If you are comparing current institutions, verify membership eligibility, fees, deposit insurance status and account agreements with the specific provider. A credit union’s shared cooperative values do not make its present-day products identical to those of Route 1.

Three member questions

Does not-for-profit mean free services?

No. A member-owned credit union may charge fees and earn a financial surplus while operating for members’ benefit. Compare its current disclosures and ask how the cost of a service is determined instead of treating the organizational label as a price guarantee.

Can I still join Route 1?

Not as a separate institution through this archival website. Route 1 merged into Decatur Earthmover Credit Union in 2017. Anyone considering membership today must follow the successor’s current eligibility criteria and application process, not a Route 1 form or an old local-area rule.

Do historical account terms apply today?

An old brochure alone cannot answer that. Changes after a merger may be reflected in agreements, notices and account records. Request current written terms from the institution responsible for the account; do not assume an archived dividend rate, minimum share amount or loan provision remains in force.

A continuing local record

Our history illustrates how a cooperative changed its name, membership reach and institutional home. The record remains worth preserving, while current financial decisions belong with verified, current information.
